SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Charlie Thrift
DESCRIPTION:Concentrated Vulnerabilities in Bees: Diet Specialists Have Smaller Geographic Ranges with Charlie Thrift\nCharlie Thrift is a PhD student at UC Santa Barbara advised by Katja Seltmann (Big-Bee project) and Hillary Young. His interest in bees began as an over-correction from his mom’s fear of bees\, and was further fostered by his time in high school in the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History’s teen science program\, Quasars to Sea Stars. Charlie seeks to inform bee conservation through a combination of museum specimens\, field work\, and community science. He will talk about his recently published research! Wild bees with small geographic ranges or narrow diet breadths may be more vulnerable to anthropogenic change. Using occurrence data and diet breadth data for 633 bee species from six families\, we find a positive correlation between these two traits. DESCRIPTION:SuperBloom Initiative: Creative Conservation \nA talk about meeting people where they are at and how creativity plays a role in conservation.  \nJanet is a Senior Designer at the Walt Disney Company\, focused on storytelling and branded spatial experiences. Nevertheless\, her passion for science communication motivates her to pursue initiatives that revolve around environmental and scientific advocacy through design intervention. Having been a lifelong SoCal resident\, learning about native ecology and early interactions with native plants and bees have given her a sense of place and purpose\, which is feeling she wants to share with others through formative environmental storytelling. \nPeggy is a brand designer for the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games\, where she focused on creating work that reflects and is shaped by the community. Her path has been sparked by a desire to make design that is both visually compelling and meaningful. That same mindset led her to an interest in bees and ecology\, recognizing their essential role in sustaining the communities she cares about. \nTogether\, Janet and Peggy founded the SuperBloom Initiative\, where they focus on creative-led solutions to help reach wider audiences and highlight the important relationships between native plants\, pollinators\, and people. \nRegister for the Zoom meeting here. \nThis meeting will not be recorded\, catch Janet and Peggy live!

DESCRIPTION:What’s Buzz’n in Humboldt? \nSince my founding in 1989\, I have been researching the insect kingdom. My lifelong passion for these amazing animals has led me to develop several educational programs for the public. My first program was developed in 2013 for Wyndham in Sedona\, Arizona. I was later recognized for my unique talents by the California State Parks where I was allowed to create new insect programs for the Northern Redwoods District starting the summer of 2024 where my success has led me to pursue my dream as an independent insect educator. \nRegister for the meeting here.

DESCRIPTION:Register for the Zoom meeting here. \n6:30 pm: We’ll spotlight a California native plant that’s been absolutely buzzing with activity lately! Then\, we’ll then turn the mic over to community members who’ve been out photographing bees to share what they’ve discovered. If you’d like to participate\, please upload your photos using this Google Form.  We’ll share your photos on screen\, and you can unmute to tell us a bit about the bee you found. \n \n7:00 pm: Cultivating Curiosity: Inspiring the Next Generation with the Lorquin Scholars \n\n\n\nCole Cramer and Connor Hsu are high school juniors with a shared passion for entomology and insect biodiversity. They are the co-founders and co-leaders of the Lorquin Scholars\, the youth chapter of the Lorquin Entomological Society\, founded in 2023 to encourage young people to study and appreciate insects. Both attended the UC Davis Bio Boot Camp for three summers and have become active youth leaders in entomology through outreach\, education\, and hands-on field experience.\n\nThrough the Lorquin Scholars\, Cole and Connor organize hikes\, insect surveys\, and educational outreach programs that introduce younger students and families throughout Southern California to the important roles insects play in ecosystems. Their work includes teaching insect identification\, field collecting techniques\, and science communication\, while helping foster curiosity and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.\n\nIn addition to leading outreach efforts\, they conduct independent fieldwork\, maintain curated entomology collections\, and explore insect diversity through direct experience. They have also attended national professional conferences and represented youth voices at scientific meetings\, museum events\, and public education programs. Through their work\, Cole and Connor hope to inspire the next generation of entomologists.
